In January 2025, the Los Angeles Fires impacted entire communities, leaving families displaced and neighborhoods forever altered. Many homes, once filled with laughter and nightly bedtime stories, were lost in the devastation. Along with schools, libraries, and youth centers, children lost the comforting spaces where stories once offered them peace, joy, adventure, and a sense of belonging.
MAGIC CABIN CARES was created to share the magic of books despite the devastation. Our mission is to collect, organize, and distribute new or gently used children’s books to families in need. While our initial efforts are focused on those impacted by the fires, our long-term goal is to support children and families facing crises, whether through natural disasters, displacement, or other hardships.
Books offer an opportunity to escape, heal, and continue learning, even in challenging times. Through partnerships with shelters, schools, and community organizations, we ensure that every book we distribute reaches those who need it most, bringing hope, comfort, and a sense of normalcy during uncertain times.
Over the past year, we have been deeply moved by the outpouring of generosity in response to the 2025 Los Angeles Fires initiative.
What began as a small idea quickly grew into something larger, supported by families, educators, university led book drives, and local businesses.
With the collection and curating phases now complete, we are humbled to share how these books are now being distributed to the Altadena and the Palisades communities affected by the fires.
Two WAYS WE’RE GIVING
We have collected well over 3,500 donated books and curated them in two thoughtful formats to share with families, classrooms, and community hubs impacted by the Los Angeles fires in Altadena, and the Palisades.
Cabin Comfort Totes
Hand dyed indigo tote bags filled with:
• 3 children’s picture books
• Stickers
• A handwritten Note of Hope
Community Book Boxes
Larger boxes of books, sorted by age and type using the public library system and meant to bring meaningful reading options into local spaces where families gather, including schools, shelters, and community relief centers.
DISTRIBUTION PARTNERSHIP
Frontline Relief Foundation
Born from the Eaton Fires in Altadena, Frontline Relief Foundation grew from a backyard donation effort into a trusted community distribution network created by neighbors directly impacted by the fires. Their systems, accountability, and heart reflect exactly the kind of disaster relief partner Magic Cabin Cares hoped to find: someone rooted in the community, serving the community, and ensuring support goes where it is truly needed.
With the collection and curation phases now complete, distribution of our Cabin Comfort Totes and Community Book Boxes will be entrusted to Frontline Relief Foundation through their established channels, community hubs, and direct impact model serving local families, schools, and fire recovery programs throughout Altadena and the Palisades.
CORPORATE PARTNER ACKNOWLEDGMENT
Grateful for the partnership with AIT Worldwide Logistics and their nonprofit arm, AIT Cares. Their first ever “BOOK IT!” Summer Book Drive brought their teammates together across 24 stations in the United States, along with teams in Canada and Mexico, with one simple intention: to give children the gift of story.
We were honored to be one of only two nonprofit recipients of this initiative, alongside fellow nonprofit Hands Across the Sea, which supports children in the Caribbean. Their support contributed to the momentum that continued to grow this project, and we remain deeply thankful.
THE HAND DYED TOTES
Our dyed bags used in this initiative were a part of our Cabin Comfort Totes, hand dyed in indigo, a color long tied to strength, love, and protection. The dyeing process became its own quiet ritual: folding, dipping, into pigment, and watching shades deepen with every pass.
No two totes came out the same. Each emerged with its own pattern, tone, and character, a small reminder that every story is unique, and that there can be beauty through change.
Stay Connected
While our book donation phase has officially closed, we’re still building community and preparing for what comes next.
To support future efforts and supply costs, message us to donate directly.
Your generosity continues to ripple outward, and we are so thankful you’ve been part of this journey.
